Research and Development
Specialising in rails requires special tools, equipment and processes that aren’t freely available on the market, and which constantly have to be adapted and improved to fit specific situations. That is the challenge that the research and development team of Vossloh Rail Services takes up every day.Based on the requirements of our operational units, the R&D team designs and builds finely tuned custom machines that can meet the unique challenges of a given task. Conceptual design, development and production are all realised within a small project team that is also responsible for testing, launching and further enhancing the machine.
The range of activities covers steel construction, measurement techniques, control engineering, dust extraction and filtering, conveyor technology, mechanical handling, and certification and homologation processes. The R&D team has the very latest in 3D-CAD software at its disposal, as well as various measuring tools, programming for control engineering, a prototype workshop and an assembly hall for rail vehicles.
Examples of developed machines are:
- High Speed Grinding train RC01—the world’s first rail grinding machine working at speeds of up to 80 km/h
- Rail transport system “STS” to be used on public flatbed rail cars
- Ultrasonic scanning heads for rail inspection at speeds of up to 80 km/h
- An inspection tool to measure the depth of metal removal during rail machining
- Machine for deburring crane rails of gantry cranes
