Rail defects on heavily used tracks spread and grow rapidly once they form. Because of this, it becomes necessary to remove a significant amount of material from the rail, preferably in one machining pass. Vossloh Rail Services offers the most advanced technology for this goal: mobile rail milling!
Together with Sersa AG of Switzerland, Vossloh Rail Services set up the company Alpha Rail Team. This joint venture operates a high-tech rail care system; the mobile rail milling machine SF03 FFS. In the second quarter of 2010 Alpha Rail Team will start operating its second milling train, doubling its milling capacity.
According to the basic principle of "milling, milling, precision grinding", the machine can treat and reprofile a rail at up to 20 m per minute.
The milling wheels can remove rail material up to a depth of 1.5 mm on the running surface and up to 5 mm on the gauge corner in one pass.
Besides the ability to eliminate major defects in one pass, milling has other advantages as well:
- No spark emissions
- No dust emissions
- No track components have to be dismantled
Performance data for SF 03-FFS
- Working speed: up to 20 m of track per minute
- Material removal of up to 1,5 mm per pass on the running surface
- Material removal of up to 5 mm per pass on the gauge corner
- Cross profile accuracy: +/- 0.3 mm
- Longitudinal profile accuracy: +/- 0.02 mm
- Surface roughness Ra < 10 µm
